Start-up operations at the Deep Oil Refining Complex began at Atyrau Refinery on December 15, 2017, as part of completing the third stage of modernization.

The official event was attended by the first deputy akim of the Atyrau region S. Lukpanov, the deputy minister of energy B. Akchulakov, acting Executive Vice President for Transportation, Refining and Marketing of NC KazMunayGas JSC D. Tiesov, General Director of "Sinopec Engineering (Group) Co., Ltd." Xiang Wenwu, as well as the management of contractors.

Galimzhan Amanturlin, the General Director of Atyrau Refinery LLP, noted: “After the commissioning of the Deep Oil Refining Complex, the plant's capacity will increase from 5 to 5.5 million tons of oil per year, the production of motor gasoline will increase to 1.7 million tons per year, diesel fuel to 1.4 million tons, jet fuel up to 244 thousand tons. Atyrau Refinery will switch to the production of motor fuels of K4 and K5 emission standards (analogs of Euro-4 and Euro-5) and will increase refinery yields to 84%”.

In his welcoming speech, S.E. Lukpanov, the first deputy akim of Atyrau region noted the high importance of the modernization of Atyrau Refinery, a strategic and city-forming enterprise, both for the western region and for the republic as a whole.

During the pre-start-up operations at the catalytic cracking unit, the reactor and regenerator lining was dried; specialists from the Axens licensor inspected the inner part and the lining; the equilibrium catalyst was loaded into the hoppers. For the fractionation unit, tests of a centrifugal compressor were completed with the participation of representatives of the manufacturer, and the system was flushed on water. Tests for tightness, as well as other works on various units of the installation took place at the reactor-regenerator unit and fractionation unit.

It should be reminded that in June of this year, there was a trial launch of the main power unit (axial compressor) of a catalytic cracking unit with a capacity of more than 20 MW. This is a unique in its parameters and the most energy-consuming unit in Kazakhstan.

For reference:

The project "Construction of a Deep Oil Refining Complex at the Atyrau Oil Refinery" was implemented within the framework of the State Program of Forced Industrial and Innovative Development of Kazakhstan and is the third and final stage of the refinery's modernization.

12 technological units and more than 40 off-site facilities were built as part of the DORC. Over 1000 units of large-sized equipment have been installed during the construction period. About 4,000 people were involved in the construction and installation work. 490 new jobs were created for the subsequent operation of the DORC. The management and production team of the new production is mainly formed from the personnel reserve of the plant. The personnel of DORC underwent theoretical training and internship at Kazakhstani and foreign refineries.
